Suspect in Folly Beach fire arrested, charged with arson

FOLLY BEACH, SC (WCSC) - FOLLY BEACH, SC (WCSC) - Investigators have arrested William Whitfield III in connection to a suspicious house fire on Folly Beach.

The fire happened Saturday afternoon at a home on 1713 West Ashley Avenue. According to Chief Deputy Brad Wade, a neighbor reported the fire around 5:30 p.m.

The Folly Beach, James Island and Charleston Fire Departments responded to the call. When fire fighters arrived on the scene the rental home was fully engulfed in flames. No one was home at the time of the fire, according to Wade.

Charleston County Sheriff Deputies charged Whitfield with second degree arson. He has been admitted to the Medical University of South Carolina and will have a bond hearing when he is released from the hospital.

Investigators believe Whitfield might be connected to another fire on Lambs Road in North Charleston. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
