About 50 people arrested in SC cockfighting raid

GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) - About 50 people have been arrested in raid at a cockfighting ring in northern South Carolina.

Multiple media outlets reported the people were charged Sunday with betting on cockfights in northern Greenville County.

Sheriff's Lt. Shea Smith says deputies found the bird fighting ring in woods almost a mile behind a house in Cleveland near the North Carolina state line.

Smith says deputies acted after getting a tip. He says other charges could be filed.

Smith says those arrested on the misdemeanor charge were released at the scene. The names of those charged have not been released.

Smith says the birds were turned over to the Humane Society of America.
