Newberry College picks new nickname from the pack

NEWBERRY, S.C. (AP) - Newberry College's new nickname is the "Wolves".

The school announced its new mascot Monday. Newberry had been without a nickname for two years after giving up "Indians" when the NCAA decided to crack down on schools with offensive mascots.

The college's board of trustees approved the new nickname this weekend before announcing it to faculty and students.

Newberry didn't want to give up the "Indians" nickname and fought the NCAA, but the governing body said the college couldn't compete for national championships if it kept the old mascot.

Newberry agreed to give up the Indians nickname so it could host a Division II playoff game in 2006.
