LONGS, SC (WMBF) - Recovery crews have found the body of a man in his 50s who disappeared while swimming Tuesday night, according to officials.
Authorities with the SC Department of Natural Resources recovered the body of the victim in 7 feet of water around 11 a.m. Wednesday.
DNR spokesman Sgt. Mike Prosser said the man was with a group Tuesday night for a memorial service on the river bank and went swimming afterward.
Witnesses told officials shortly before 10 p.m. they saw the victim throw his hands in the air, and then he disappeared.
Rescue crews with Horry County Fire Rescue, North Myrtle Beach and DNR began searching the Waccamaw River near Longs Tuesday night. Early Wednesday morning, they suspended search efforts until daybreak Wednesday morning.
The identity of the victim has not yet been released.
