'Raghead' comment subject of Lexington county GOP meeting

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - The "raghead" comment made by a South Carolina senator to describe the front-runner in the Republican gubernatorial contest is the topic of a special meeting.

The executive committee of the Lexington County Republican Party is scheduled to meet Thursday evening to discuss the comments made by GOP Sen. Jake Knotts.

Knotts referred to Rep. Nikki Haley as a "raghead" on an Internet political talk show last Thursday. He later apologized, saying the remarks were meant as a joke. Both Knotts and Haley live in Lexington County.

Haley grew up in the Sikh faith but describes herself as Methodist.

The comments came days before voters went to primary polls Tuesday. She's heading to a June 22 runoff with a commanding lead over U.S. Rep. Gresham Barrett.
