Police make burglary arrest after victim, witness chase down suspect

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Police arrested one suspect and are looking for another in connection with a burglary that happened early Friday morning.

Allen Francis Young, 23, of Hanover Street, was arrested and charged with burglary.

Charleston police were dispatched to the area of 145 Church St. in reference to a larceny. Police spoke with the victim who said he was returning home with a female friend when he witnessed Young and another man exiting his apartment.

The second suspect is described as a white male with a short, close-cropped hair cut wearing a T-shirt.

The victim noticed the two suspects carrying his laptop computer bag, a second computer and a bottle of vodka. The victim then chased the suspects on foot, heading north on Church Street.

Two of the victim's friends entered a vehicle and drove after the victim and the suspects. The victim stopped chasing the suspects when he discovered the stolen property discarded on the ground in a parking lot on Church and Cumberland streets.

The victim then called two other friends who had driven him home earlier and told them to pick up the stolen property.

Meanwhile, the victim's friends continued following the suspects in their vehicle. They observed the suspects running through a bank parking lot on Cumberland and Meeting streets. The  male friend then exited the vehicle and caught up with Young on foot.

The friend attempted to detain Young and a physical confrontation occurred. Young was tackled and struck in the face several times, resulting in several cuts and bruises. The witnesses then waited for police to arrive.

Young is being held in the Charleston County Detention Center.
