COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - The last-place finisher in the South Carolina gubernatorial primary, Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer, has endorsed an Upstate congressman in the runoff.
Bauer said in a news release Friday that Gresham Barrett has the character and judgment to accomplish the goals Bauer has for the state.
The lieutenant governor says the front-runner, state Rep. Nikki Haley, has misrepresented her conservative credentials even though she received much of her support from tea party activists.
Haley narrowly missed winning Tuesday's primary outright, getting 49% of the vote compared with Barrett's 22%. Bauer garnered just 12% of the vote Tuesday.
The third-place finisher, Attorney General Henry McMaster, has not endorsed either runoff candidate.
