SC State hopes to soon build transportation center

ORANGEBURG, S.C. (AP) - Officials at South Carolina State University in Orangeburg say they hope to begin construction soon on the first phase of a transportation research center.

Little has been done at the $80 million James E. Clyburn University Transportation Center. The center was announced in 1998 to conduct research and train workers in the transportation industry.

The U.S. Transportation Department cut off funding in 2006 and programs at the school are surviving with leftover grants. A federal audit on 1 of those grants found the school's records were so confusing that accountants couldn't tell where millions of dollars went.

A school official says a new accounting system has made it hard to go back and see how funds were spent earlier.
