FORT JACKSON, S.C. (AP) - The Army is celebrating its 235th birthday in South Carolina with a concert by the Fort Jackson Army Band.
Army officials say the concert was being held Monday evening at the First Baptist Church in nearby Columbia.
The celebration features a ceremony with military flags and streamers and a traditional cutting of an Army birthday cake. Tickets to the event were available at Fort Jackson's travel office and First Baptist Church.
On June 14, 1775, the Second Continental Congress convened in Philadelphia and approved the creation of the Continental Army.
The following day, the Congress named George Washington as its commander in chief.
