GAFFNEY, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina officials have exhumed the body of the husband of a woman now charged with killing former York Mayor Melvin Roberts.
The Herald of Rock Hill reported that Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler had the body of 65-year-old Edward Phillips of Gaffney exhumed Monday after his family requested an investigation of his 1999 death at an Atlanta hospital.
Phillips' wife, 66-year-old Julia Phillips, was charged last month with murder in the February strangling death of Roberts at his home in York.
Julia Phillips was released from jail last week and has been placed on house arrest with an electronic monitor while she awaits trial.
York police say Phillips had told them she had been tied up and robbed at Roberts home when he was killed. Police say she changed her story several times.
