North Charleston man arrested for assaulting SLED agents at Bike Week

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WCSC) - A North Charleston man Tuesday was arrested by state police for allegedly assaulting two officers during Bike Week.

According to the State Law Enforcement Division release, Brandon Lamar Simmons, 21, of harvey Avenue, was charged with two counts of assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature.

On May 29, Simmons dragged one state trooper down Highway 17 and struck another trooper with a sport utility vehicle, according to the arrest warrant.

SLED agents said the incident occurred after one of the troopers approached Simmons' vehicle when he failed to follow directions during a traffic stop. The trooper tried to put the vehicle in park after spotting a controlled substance in Simmons' vehicle, but Simmons drove away while the trooper held on to the vehicle.

A second trooper stepped into the path of Simmons' SUV to stop him, but Simmons struck the officer.

The release did not disclose the condition of the officers.
