COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A South Carolina man originally sentenced to two years for watching a cockfight will be fined instead.
The State newspaper reported that Swansea Magistrate William Shockley on Wednesday reversed his decision to send 36-year-old Chad Gable of Orangeburg to prison.
Gable's lawyers say their client will be allowed to pay fines and court costs totaling $4,200.
Undercover agents had videotaped Gable attending two cockfights. A magistrate's jury had convicted Gable last week.
Defense attorneys Rauch (rock) Wise and Jack Duncan say Gable had no prior criminal record. The lawyers told Shockley that Gable shouldn't go to prison just because he asked for a jury trial.
Nine other co-defendants have pleaded guilty and been fined.
