CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Nine firefighters who died when a blaze swept through a furniture store on the South Carolina coast three years ago are being remembered.
A memorial is being held Friday on the site of the fire which swept through the Sofa Super Store in Charleston on June 18, 2007.
The Charleston Fire Department is holding a private memorial service for the families of the firefighters for an hour Friday evening. The ceremony concludes with the reading of the names of the fallen firefighters and the ringing of a bell. Then the site is open to the public.
A municipal commission has recommended the city put an outdoor memorial and build the fire department headquarters at the site.
