Lowcountry residents note importance of state's ports

MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (AP) - Hundreds of Lowcountry residents gather to celebrate the importance of South Carolina's ports.

A Port Community Day featuring a parade of boats that work in Charleston Harbor is set Saturday at Mount Pleasant's Waterfront Memorial Park.

The event also features speeches and live music and is sponsored by more than a dozen local maritime organizations and businesses.

An economic impact study compiled two years ago showed that commerce through the state's ports provides more than 50,000 jobs in the Charleston region.
