Charges mount for trio accused in string of bank robberies

NORTH CHARELSTON, SC (WCSC) - Charges continue to mount against a trio of bank robbery suspects who allegedly teamed up to rob at least eight banks since the start of the year.

Kerwyn Fyfe, Kevin Smith and Shakema McClellan Monday were served with warrants issued by the Charleston City Police Department at the Charleston County Detention Center. The three are being held on similar charges by several other law enforcement agencies in the Charleston metro area.

Charleston police charged Fyfe, 38, and Smith, with two counts of entering a bank with the intent to steal in connection to the March 19 robbery of a Wachovia Bank branch on Orleans Road and a March 22 robbery of a Harbor National Bank branch on Old Towne Road.

McClellan was charged with one count of entering a bank with the intent to steal for the March 19 bank robbery.

In addition to the charges levied against the trio Monday, they are also facing charges from the North Charleston Police Department and the Charleston County Sheriff's Office.

Smith was charged by North Charleston police with five counts of entering a bank with the intent to steal for his involvement in a Wachovia robbery on Jan. 14, a BB&T robbery on March 24, a First Citizens robbery on March 25, another Wachovia robbery on June 18 and another First Citizens robbery on June 21.

McClellan was charged with entering a financial institution with intent to steal for the BB&T robbery on March 24 and First Citizens Bank on March 25 and June 21. North Charleston police also charged McClellan for her part in the Jan. 14 Wachovia robbery.

Charleston County deputies have charged Smith and McClellan with one count each of bank robbery for a Jan. 19 BB&T robbery.

Fyfe was charged by North Charleston police for entering a bank with the intent to steal in the Jan. 14, March 24 and March 25 robberies. Fyfe was charged by Charleston City Police for his part in the March 19 and 22 robberies.

Smith was arrested Monday following the First Citizens Bank robbery.
