Traveling nurse killed after wreck on US 78

DORCHESTER COUNTY, SC (WCSC) – The South Carolina Highway Patrol says one person is dead after crashing into an 18-wheeler just west of Summerville on US 78.

Paul Brouthers, the public information officer for the highway patrol, said the accident occurred at the intersection of Campbell Thicket Road in Dorchester County around 4 p.m. Thursday.

Sonja Mento, a 63-year-old traveling hospice nurse from Arlington, Texas, died when her Toyota ran into an 18-wheeler while trying to make a left turn onto Highway 78.  Brouthers said the woman who was driving the Toyota failed to yield while turning.

Mento had just left a patient's home when she apparently missed a stop sign and pulled out in front of an 18 wheeler.

The identities of both drivers are unknown at this time.  The 41-year old driver of the 18-wheeler was airlifted to M.U.S.C.  Her condition is unknown at this time, but Highway Patrol officials say she is expected to recover from her injuries.
