Bank robbery suspects hit with another charge

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - A man already charged in five bank robberies is now charged with a sixth.

The Charleston County sheriff's office Kevin Tony Smith with robbing the BB&T at 1962 Sam Rittenburg Boulevard on January 19. The sheriff's office also charged Shakema Claudette McClellan as his accomplice. McClellan allegedly drove Smith to and from the robbery.

According to an affidavit, McClellan drove Smith in her Ford Explorer to a Sunoco gas station on the same street as the BB&T. She acted as if she was pumping gas while Smith went on foot to rob the bank. Smith returned and the two fled in McClellan's car.

North Charleston police have Smith in custody on five other bank robbery charges. Smith now faces entering a bank with intent to steal charges in the following bank robberies:

  • January 14: Wachovia Bank at Gaslight Square
  • January 19: BB&T at 1962 Sam Rittenburg Boulevard
  • March 24: BB&T Bank on Northwoods Boulevard
  • March 25: First Citizens on Rivers Avenue
  • June 21: First Citizens on Rivers Avenue

McClellan faces entering a financial institution with intent to steal for the following:

  • March 24: BB&T Bank on Northwoods Boulevard
  • March 25: First Citizens on Rivers Avenue
  • June 21: First Citizens on Rivers Avenue

McClellan faces a charge of accessory after the fact of entering a financial institute with intent to steal for the robbery at Wachovia Bank at Gas Lite Square on January 14.

Both suspects will have a bond hearing Friday at 7 p.m.
