Live 5 becomes the home for the SC Education Lottery drawing

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Starting Monday night, Live 5 News is the new home for the South Carolina Education Lottery drawing. Tune in every night at 7 p.m. and 11 p.m. for the drawing.

Eight years ago, residents voted for a lottery to fund programs in four different areas and draw students to stay in the state for college who might otherwise leave.

Director Paula Bethea says the numbers show it's been a success so far, with funding going to "K through 12 education, public libraries, ETV and the majority of the dollars go to top scholarships for universities and colleges in South Carolina."

"We have transferred $2.2 billion to education in South Carolina," she said. "It's quite astonishing when you stop to think about it."

What makes the lottery so successful is its accessibility. Tickets are available at thousands of locations across the state. Bethea says the retailers are geographically dispersed across the Upstate, the Midlands and the Lowcountry. However, the top lottery retailer in the state is located in Charleston.

"The No. 1 lottery retailer in the entire state is right here on Savannah Highway," said Bethea. "And while you can claim some cash prized at retailers, prizes for more than $500 have to be claimed at a claim center."

The claim center in the Lowcountry is located in Mt. Pleasant on Coleman Boulevard.

And now, to see if you picked the winning numbers, you can tune in to Live 5 News at 7 p.m. and 11 p.m.

"We're thrilled to have WCSC, the news leader, as our partner. You will televise the draws at night. You have a wonderful, large audience. We feel like it's your way of saying, 'We're committed to education, too.' and it makes a huge difference," said Bethea.

Bethea says she looks forward to the partnership and to the continued success of the SC Education Lottery.

Officials said people need to keep in mind the lottery is only intended to be a game. If it becomes more than that and you think you have a problem, there are ways to get help. If you or someone you know has a gambling problem, check out the assistance offered by Play Responsibly SC.
