Morning fire destroys downtown apartment

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – Firefighters worked to put out a fire early Saturday morning at a downtown apartment complex.

Officials with the Charleston City Fire Department said the fire started in a room in one of the apartments in the complex on Meeting Street near the intersection of Huger Street.

Investigators say they were able to get that fire under control.

The local chapter of the American Red Cross said two of the four people who lived in those apartments were home at the time of the fire.

No one was hurt.

The Red Cross said all four units were destroyed by the blaze.

The Red Cross has now assisted 582 victims of house fires since January of this year.
