Ex-sheriff of Berkeley County dies at 85

GOOSE CREEK, SC (WCSC) - Former Berkeley County Sheriff M.C. Cannon died Sunday at age 85.

Cannon served two terms as sheriff in the 1980s. He lived in Goose Creek and before serving as sheriff, he served 27 years as a Berkeley County magistrate.

Cannon, a Democrat, lost re-election in 1990 to Republican Ray Isgett. He went on to serve as chairman of the Berkeley Electric Cooperative after his time as sheriff.

"It is with tremendous sadness that we learn of the death of former Berkeley County Sheriff M.C. Cannon who passed away (Sunday) morning," said current Berkeley County sheriff Wayne DeWitt. "The Berkeley County Sheriff's Office sends condolences to Mr. Cannon's family."

Cannon was a World War II Navy veteran and husband of Aileen Forte Cannon.
