Traffic fatalities up on South Carolina roads

COLUMBIA, SC (WCSC) - COLUMBIA, SC (WCSC) - According to the Department of Public Safety, since July 1 there have been 23 traffic fatalities on South Carolina roads.

As of July 5, 382 people had died on South Carolina highways, compared to 449 last year at this time.

The numbers are disturbing in terms of how dangerous South Carolina roads have been so far this month.

Five of those deaths happened last weekend alone.

Four of the fatalities occurred over the Fourth of July holiday weekend, which is a decrease from last year when 12 people died over the Independence day weekend.

So far this year, 22 people have died on in Charleston County, 13 were killed in Berkeley County and eight died in Dorchester County.

Of the 287 motor vehicle occupants who have died in 2010, 160 were not wearing seat belts.
