DARINGTON, SC (WMBF) - Deputies with the Darlington County Sheriff's Office have arrested one of two suspects at the center of an AMBER Alert issued in Hartsville on Wednesday.
Capt. Andy Locklair, spokesman for the Darlington County Sheriff's Office, said deputies apprehended Kimberly Steen, 25, after receiving an anonymous tip Thursday morning. Locklair said Steen was arrested at a home on Berry Road in Bishopville.
Locklair said a second suspect, identified as Johnathen Smith, ran from the house and is currently being pursued by deputies in a wooded area near the residence.
Deputies with the Darlington County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to a home at 2459 Sampit Dr. in Hartsville around 8:30 a.m. Wednesday after the child's grandmother reported her missing. The grandmother claimed Peterson was taken by Steen, her biological mother.
Steen, according to Peterson's grandmother, did not have custodial rights of the 5-year-old.
Capt. Andy Locklair, spokesman for the Darlington County Sheriff's Office, said deputies were looking for Steen prior to the alleged abduction.
