SURF CITY, NC (WECT) - A five-month-old dog in Surf City is being called a lifesaver.

In the early morning hours of July 11, "Diva" woke up on her owner's bed.

"She was pouncing on my face and running around in circles on the bed," said "Diva's" owner, Taylor Sumberlin.

Sumberlin knew the dog did not have to go to the bathroom, since she had been out a few hours earlier. Plus, she says it's odd for the dog to want to play while she is sleeping.

Sumberlin lets the dog outside of her condo and "Diva" bolted to the bottom of the staircase.  A man laying lifelessly was on the ground.

"Diva was sitting next to him, just looking up at the stairs and waiting for me get down there," said Sumberlin.

The paramedics were called to the condo complex at 305 N. Topsail Drive.  It was determined that the man had suffered a heart attack.  One paramedic told Sumberlin that if it were not for "Diva," it's likely the man would not have made it.

"With all of that happening, I know that she will always be there for me and protect me," said Sumberlin.

The man is still in the hospital for tests.  He could be released on Thursday.
