Charleston police arrest 16, 13-year-old purse snatchers

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Two juveniles were arrested for stealing a woman's purse in downtown Charleston Tuesday.

Charleston police arrested a 16- and 13-year-old male about 25 minutes after the two suspects are accused of stealing a purse.

The victim reported that her brown colored Louis Vuitton bag, which contained her car keys, a Vera Bradley wallet, a credit card and her license was stolen.

According to police, a woman and her friend were walking down King Street around 7:30 Tuesday night when one woman felt someone grab her purse from her right hand. She turned around and observed one of the offenders holding her purse and the second offender standing with him.

The suspects froze for a moment as the victim yelled at them. The suspects then turned and ran into the gated alley beside 337 King St., which leads into a College of Charleston parking lot.

The victim described the suspects to police as black males between 16 and 17 years old. She added that one was wearing a white shirt and the other a black shirt. Their clothes were baggy.

Police were able to locate the suspects in the area of Vanderhost and Pitt Street. The victim positively identified the suspects and they were taken into custody and then turned over to juvenile authorities.
