Pump at North Charleston Hess burns

NORTH CHARLESTON (WCSC) - North Charleston firefighters responded to the Hess gas station at 8620 Dorchester road to battle a burning gas pump.  The incident took place about 10:30 Wednesday morning.

Witnesses say a driver struck the pump while moving through the parking lot.  The driver was able to pull away from the pump before it became fully engulfed in flames.

Safety measures in place prevented the blaze from spreading to the building or main gas storage tank.  The assistant manager of the gas station activated the emergency fuel cut-off switch in the store, and safety valve in the pump activated automatically and prevented fuel from the main storage tank from escaping and fueling the fire.

Fire crews were able to quickly extinguish the fire.
