Bicyclist dies days after downtown Charleston accident

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - The man who was injured in a bicycle accident Wednesday morning has died, said the Charleston County coroner.

Cyclist Edwin Gardner was injured Wednesday morning when his bicycle collided with an SUV on Lockwood Boulevard in downtown Charleston.

According to an accident report, Gardner was dragged 15 feet when the driver of a Jeep tried to go around Gardner and he veered into the Jeep's path. Gardner and the driver of the Jeep were both turning onto Montagu at the time of the accident.

Gardner had severe lacerations to his body and major road rash, said the report. He was transported to the Medical University hospital by Charleston EMS.

The report notes that the bike's front tire and handle bars were bent backwards in the accident.

Officers on the scene determined Gardner was as fault, but he will not be charged.

Damage to the Jeep and the bike was estimated at $200.
