COLUMBIA, SC (AP) - Vice President Joe Biden praised former Sen. Ernest Hollings as he attended the dedication of a library at the University of South Carolina named for the longtime senator.
Biden thanked Hollings Friday for his years of guidance as the men served together in Washington. Biden also said Hollings helped persuade him to stay in the Senate after Biden's wife and daughter died in a 1972 accident.
Hollings sounded like he was campaigning when he addressed about 1,000 people crowded into the library. He says Biden and President Obama need to work harder to get the economy going.
Hollings represented South Carolina for nearly 50 years.
The 50,000-square-foot facility houses the South Carolina Political Collections, which document the careers of many of the state's political leaders.
