Coroner investigating drowning death of SC woman

BLACKSBURG, S.C. (AP) - A South Carolina coroner is investigating the death of a 49-year-old woman who drowned in the Broad River.

Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler said in a news release that Teresa Ann Laney of Rock Hill died Friday near Blacksburg.

Laney and a friend were preparing to paddle an inflatable kayak in the river when Laney said she was going to get in the water to cool off. Laney's friend checked on her after a few minutes and she was gone.

Others boating on the river spotted Laney floating a few feet from shore and called 911. Laney was in about five feet of water when she was pulled from the river and CPR was started.

Laney was pronounced dead at a local hospital. An autopsy was scheduled.
