SC talk part of prelude to Civil War anniversary

SULLIVANS ISLAND, S.C. (AP) - A talk on the nullification crisis of the 1830s is part of a series of events leading to South Carolina's commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War.

The talk, entitled Impending War, is being given by a National Park Service ranger on Saturday at Fort Moultrie on Sullivan's Island northeast of Charleston.

The nullification crisis is considered the first real test of the meaning of the union of the United States.

During the Jackson administration, South Carolina leaders meeting in convention declared two federal tariffs unconstitutional and thus unenforceable within the state.

There was talk of fighting but the immediate crisis was avoided when a new tariff more acceptable to South Carolina was passed byCongress.
