FOLLY BEACH, SC (WCSC) - Folly Beach police are investigating an apparent rape that happened after a woman and her friend visited a downtown Charleston gentlemen's club and a beachfront restaurant.
The 30-year-old victim came to on the side of the road with her shirt on backwards, blood on her pants and missing her underwear. She told police she remembered few details from the evening.
According to the victim, she and a friend made a trip to Jaguars Gentlemen's Club on Pittsburgh Avenue in downtown Charleston the evening of July 15. There, they met an older man who bought the victim a non-alcoholic drink. The victim told police she thinks the man was about 60 years old.
The victim told police she and her friend left the club and headed to the Folly Beach Crab Shack. On the way to the restaurant, the victim said she felt "incoherent and groggy" and only vaguely remembered visiting the restaurant.
The next thing she remembered was being awoken by a couple who found her on the side of the road on James Island. The couple took her to a nearby friend's house. Her fiancee arrived shortly after and took the victim to MUSC. Hospital staff tested her with a rape kit, the report stated.
The director of the rape victim counseling organization, People Against Rape, said she has noticed about a 75 percent increase in sexual assault cases in which the victim had been drugged.
