Article ranks SC as 8th laziest in US

(WCSC) - A Businessweek article using a recent government study ranks South Carolina as the eighth-laziest state in the nation.

The study ranked states by examining where people spend the most time sitting around. The U.S. Bureau of Labor tracked data over a five-year period to compile the rankings, evaluating how much time people over the age of 15 spent their day sitting, surfing the internet or sleeping.

On average, South Carolinians spend 8 hours, 42 minutes a day sleeping and more than three hours watching TV. In fact, South Carolinians spend more time watching TV than people from any other state.

The Businessweek article highlighting the 20 laziest states cites the SC Department of Health and Environmental Control as reporting only half the adults in the state get the recommended amount of physical activity, only one-third have sidewalks in their neighborhoods, and only 37.4 percent use parks, playgrounds or other outdoor locales for physical activity.

SC Stats:

• Time sleeping: 8 hours, 42 minutes

• Time watching TV: 3 hours, 7 minutes

• Time relaxing and thinking: 25 minutes

Time socializing: 40 minutes

Time working: 3 hours, 26 minutes

Obesity ranking: 9

The laziest state on the list is Louisiana. The study ranked North Dakota and Hawaii as the least-lazy states.
