Georgetown drowning victim identified

GEORGETOWN, SC (WCSC) - Georgetown County Sheriff's Office says the body of a missing swimmer has been found in the Santee River near Pole Yard Landing Saturday morning.

A witness told investigators that a black man in his mid-50's was swimming in the river near the landing where he went under water and never resurfaced.

Georgetown Deputies responded to the possible drowning at around 7:40 p.m. Friday. The search continued until 2 a.m. Saturday.

The victim has been identified as 51-year-old Gene Grayson.

Georgetown County Sheriff's Office Marine and Patrol and SC Department of Natural Resource Aviation Division resumed the search for the missing swimmer at 7:30 a.m. Saturday.

Sheriff's deputies used a side scan sonar unit to locate the victim's body which was near the exact location where the witness also told deputies the victim was last seen.

Deputies say using the side scan sonar allowed them to locate the victim's body in less than 10 minutes.
