State Senate leader wants review of naval museum

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - The leader of the South Carolina Senate wants auditors to review operations of the Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reported that Senate President Pro Tem Glenn McConnell wants the Legislative Audit Council to conduct a management performance audit of the financially ailing museum in Mount Pleasant.

McConnell hopes the review will help avoid a public bailout of the state-owned attraction. He says he's worried that Patriots Point has been overcome by its liabilities.

Patriots Point borrowed $9 million from the state to repair the sinking destroyer USS Laffey without any way to repay the money or even to bring the destroyer back to the museum.
