CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn of South Carolina is addressing lawmakers from across the South at a conference.
Clyburn speaks on Tuesday to an estimated 1,600 lawmakers and others gathered in Charleston for the annual meeting of the Southern Legislative Conference.
Lawmakers from 15 states are attending the conference, which continues through Wednesday.
South Carolina House Speaker Bobby Harrell is chairman of the group.
Clyburn is the first black congressman elected in South Carolina since Reconstruction.
