CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - A man is behind bars after stealing a car with a woman's 3-year-old daughter in the backseat late Monday night.
According to Charleston police, Edwin Taylor, 31, was charged with kidnapping and motor vehicle theft.
According to Pamela Page, 22, who is the child's mother and car's owner, she left her child inside the running vehicle while she stood outside it talking to someone on the street. Taylor entered the vehicle and drove off, she told officers.
Taylor was spotted by officers several minutes later on State Street at a convenience store who approached him about the volume of the music in the car.
According to the report, Taylor was beaten and bleeding and told officers he had been beat up by his girlfriend. Officers determined his license had been suspended and told him he would have to call his girlfriend to pick up the car.
When Page arrived at the scene, the report stated, she tried to attack Taylor and was yelling "Where's my kid!"
It was then officers found the child in the back seat strapped into an overturned child seat. EMS was called to make sure the baby was okay.
Taylor was arrested and put in a patrol car where he tried to kick and spit on the arresting officer. He was escorted to a transport van and transported to the Charleston County Detention Center.
