James Island park drowning victim identified

JAMES ISLAND, SC (WCSC) – The body of a missing swimmer was pulled from the water at James Island County Park Wednesday evening.

A witness told police that her friend fell into the water from the fishing dock after his casting net got caught in the dock around 8 p.m.

Officials at the coroner's office Thursday afternoon identified the man as 54-year-old Norris White from Charleston.

White climbed down into the water to free the net, but he lost his footing and began struggling to stay above the surface. After a few seconds he went under water and did not return to the surface.

White's friend then ran to the parking lot, retrieved her cell phone and called 911.

A dive team and Charleston County Rescue were able to recover White from the water, but he was unresponsive and pronounced dead at the scene.
