Interstate sign falls onto semi after car causes wreck

LEXINGTON COUNTY (WIS) - An accident Thursday evening on Interstate 26 knocked a overhead roadway sign on top of an 18-wheeler and temporarily shut down the highway.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol said it happened around 7:00pm on I-26 West at mile marker 115, near the I-77 interchange. Troopers said a 1996 Honda driven by Tobias Crecensio of North Charleston changed lanes and hit an 18-wheeler.

The 18-wheeler, driven by Dean Crowell of Leesville, veered off the roadway and hit the sign hanging over the interstate. The sign fell on top of the back of the semi.

Crecensio was not injured, but Crowell was taken to Lexington Medical Center with minor injuries.  Both men were wearing seatbelts.

According to the Highway Patrol, Crecensio is charged with making an improper lane change.

Troopers said I-26 was shut down for about half an hour after the accident while crews cleared the roadway, reopening by 8:00pm.
