Cyclist not at fault in fatal collision

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Edwin Gardner, a cycling advocate killed in a collision on July 21, has been cleared of responsibility for the accident according to the Charleston Police Department.

Based on initial information gathered at the scene, police came to the conclusion that Gardner was at fault in the accident.  A more thorough review of the evidence by the CPD's Fatal Collision Team and interviews with the driver and additional witnesses have led police to now conclude that the driver of the Jeep that killed Gardner is at fault.

Charlotte White will be charged with following too closely.  White will have a hearing on the charge, but no court date has yet been set.

The accident happened about 7:45 a.m. at the intersection of Montagu Street and Lockwood Boulevard in downtown Charleston.   Gardner was dragged about 15 feet after being struck by White's vehicle.

Gardner suffered severe injuries and died two days later.
