LEXINGTON, N.C. (WBTV/AP) - Police have charged a 21-year-old North Carolina man with murder after investigators say a teenager was killed by a paving stone thrown through a car window.
Investigators say Shelby Chisom, 17, and Michael John Craver, 21, were attending a party Friday night that spilled over into Saturday morning. Chisom was sitting in the front passenger seat of a car when she was hit by the stone.
Chisom was reportedly taken to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center where she was pronounced dead. She was a student at North Davidson High School and has been described a soccer standout at the school.
North Davidson parents and many students received the news Saturday as some yearly athletic photos were being taken at the school, according to sports website myndsports.com. The athletes and parents were informed during "a packed athletic parents meeting in the Pete Jones Gymnasium," the website said.
Craver was arrested Saturday morning and was being held in the Davidson County jail. A jail official said Sunday that Craver did not have an attorney.
His first court appearance is scheduled for Monday.
