Coroner IDs airman killed in single-car accident

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - A Charleston airman was killed in a single-vehicle accident in Ladson Monday evening.

The accident happened at about 5:30 p.m. Monday at Koester and Ladson Roads, according to North Charleston Police spokesman Spencer Pryor. He added that the SUV left the road and hit several trees.

A power pole was also knocked over in the accident and had to be replaced. SCE&G crews expected to have all power restored by 1 a.m. Tuesday.

Tuesday afternoon, officials from the Charleston County Coroner's office identified the victim as 35-year-old Joseph Villasenor. He died at the scene due to injuries sustained in the crash, said officials.

Villasenorwas assigned to the 437th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron at Charleston AFB.

"We send our sincerest sympathy and condolences to the family and friends of the Airman who died in (Monday's) car crash," said Col. John Wood, 437th Airlift Wing commander. "Any time Team Charleston loses one of it's own, it's felt throughout the entire community here at Charleston AFB."
