HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) - A South Carolina county has pledged to loan the PGA Tour's Heritage golf tournament $1 million to ensure it returns to Hilton Head Island next year.
The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports Beaufort County Council's commitment on Monday follows last week's promise by the island town to award a $1 million grant if the tourney can't find a new title sponsor.
Last spring's tournament was the final one sponsored by Verizon.
Tournament organizers hope the government commitments will convince the PGA there is enough financial backing to secure the Heritage a date on next year's tour schedule.
Organizers plan to speak with tour officials Tuesday and say a date could be secured during that conversation.
