Charleston County to use Twitter, Facebook for emergency info

CHARLESTON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Emergency notifications from the Charleston County government just went social.

The agency announced Wednesday that the public can now get instant updates over two major social media platforms by following @ChasCountyGov on Twitter and becoming a fan of the county's Emergency Management Department on Facebook.

Officials said the two sites would be used to relay information on emergencies in real-time and offer preparedness information, training and events schedules. The hope is to increase the accuracy and timeliness of critical information like evacuation orders and shelter information, officials said.

"With Twitter, citizens can follow the County to receive emergency information the minute it's released, directly from county officials," said Jason Patno, the director of Charleston County's Emergency Management Department. "It's another step in empowering the public to be prepared, get information first-hand and take action during an emergency."

The agency has yet to tweet, so it remains to be seen if the agency will use the established community-based hashtags as part of the information dissemination.
