Red Cross assists family after blaze destroys home

MACEDONIA, SC (WCSC) -  An early-morning fire destroyed a home in Macedonia Saturday, leaving two children and one adult without a home.

The fire occurred at 165 DeWitt Road in Macedonia, which is located in Berkeley County.

The Lowcountry chapter of the American Red Cross was called to assist the devastated family with their immediate disaster caused needs. The Red Cross is providing financial assistance to replace food lost in the fire and helping replace lost clothing.

The family is staying with relatives until arrangements for long-term housing can be arranged. Red Cross volunteers gave teddy bears to the small children and comfort kits containing basic necessities like toothbrushes, tooth paste and shampoo.

Red Cross mental health and health services are following up with the family to help replace lost medications and continue to guide them through this traumatic event.

The Red Cross has assisted 756 residential fire victims needing aid due to home fires in its seven-county region of Beaufort, Berkeley, Charleston, Colleton, Dorchester, Hampton and Jasper Counties since Jan. 1, 2010.
