"Dead birds in the water" - seized horses now recovering

MEGGETT, SC (WCSC) - Six underfed horses from a Johns Island farm are in foster care, recovering from what officials describe as awful conditions.

Officials with L.E.A.R.N. horse rescue group in Meggett say they had almost no water, and one trough had dead birds floating in the water.

The horses were taken from Kennerleigh Farms on Johns Island. Officials say they were 300-400 pounds underweight.

Rescue officials say their owner, Rebecca Housley, may have just gotten in over her head.  Deputies say she will be charged with ill treatment to animals at a court date this Thursday. Until then, deputies will check on the other 24 horses on the farm to make sure they have enough food.

The College of Charleston uses the facility for its horseback riding classes. College spokesman Mike Robertson said officials there are "concerned about the allegations."

Ms. Housley has not returned phone calls made by Live 5 News.
