MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (WCSC) - Despite being permanent executive director at Patriots Point for less than a year, Dick Trammell offered his resignation Friday.

Trammell wrote a letter to Patriots Point Development Authority chairman John Hagerty, staying he will continue in his current role through year's end. He also offered to return to his old position of tourism and business development director in 2011.

Trammell became interim executive director when retired Army Brigadier Gen. Hugh Tant III resigned in April 2009. Patriots Point needed millions of dollars in repairs to its warships at that time.

The museum received a $9.2 million state loan under Trammell, but failed to receive federal grant money it needed to repay the state funds.

Trammell became permanent executive director in September and he earns $90,000 a year.

Patriots Point also recently unveiled a preliminary plan to redevelop almost 400 acres of waterfront land.  The plan proposes retail shops, restaurants and 3 villages: one near the Yorktown, one near the Cooper River Bridge and one on the Harbor.
