Driver charged in Highway 61 wreck that killed Summerville woman

WEST ASHLEY, SC (WCSC) - A woman was killed after a head-on-collision on Ashley River Road Tuesday morning.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol said the accident happened near the Middleton Gardens just inside Dorchester County before 8 a.m. and a woman is dead.

Highway Patrol Cpl. Paul Brouthers said that 33-year-old Rocio Maciaf, of Charleston, was heading to Summerville on Highway 61 in a GMC Envoy. She struck a Honda driven by 23-year-old Whitney Simmons of Summerville.

The impact to the driver's side of the car killed Simmons instantly and then her car was T-boned by a Jeep. Macias was flown to MUSC by helicopter and the Jeep driver was transported to Summerville Medical Center.

Macias' condition is unkown at this time. She is being charged with driving left of center.

Highway 61 was backed up for several hours, but was reopened to traffic about four and a half hours after the accident. The third person involved in the accident was also female, but her name and condition has not been released.
