Charleston sailor prepares for around the world race

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Sailor Brad Van Liew of South Carolina is making final preparations for the solo Velux 5 Oceans around the world race.

Van Liew's 60-foot racing yacht is in a marina in Charleston. He leaves Sept. 5 for France for the race that starts there in October.

Van Liew earlier left his job as director of the South Carolina Maritime Foundation to prepare for the race, which has a stopover in Charleston next year.

He's the only American in the field.

Van Liew has already won the Around Alone race and would, if he finishes the Velux, become the first American skipper to officially finish three around the world solo races.
