Teen hides in closet while home is ransacked

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - A 15-year-old survived a terrifying ordeal. Police said two men broke into his house in the middle of the day on Saturday.

Savannah-Chatham Metro Police caught one of the burglars, but the other is still on the run.

Duc Nguyen was home alone in his Whitemarsh Island house on Saturday while his parents were at work.

He said he saw two men pull into the driveway and begin banging on the front door. That's when he called 911 and hid in the closet.

"I rushed immediately into the closet and I called the police to tell them what was happening and that's when I could hear people banging on the back door instead of just the front," Nguyen said.

Nguyen said the burglars used a crowbar to bust open the back door. They stole a camera, laptop, and other electronics. Then they came to the closet the 15-year-old was hiding in.

"Eventually one of them opened the door and there I was just sitting on the floor. At first he didn't see me. He was looking to see if there was anything he could steal. But then he saw me and he ran away," Nguyen said.

Police said the suspects crashed their car into a fence at Johnson High School.

K-9 units tracked down Damien Gaines and police said they found two weapons nearby.

Gaines is charged in three separate robberies police said occurred on Saturday.

It was a tense situation and even the 911 operator was impressed a teenager could stay so calm.

"When I told her I was only 15, she said I was very collected and that I didn't panic," Nguyen said.

Police said the car the suspects were in was stolen and so was one of the weapons they recovered. If you have any information about the other suspect, call Crime Stoppers at 912.234.2020.
