FOLLY BEACH, SC (WCSC) – The sister of a man who died this week from injuries sustained in a hit-and-run accident is making a plea, hoping someone will come forward with information.
Eugene Mathes, 61, died Tuesday night at MUSC, a little more than three weeks after the accident.
Police say Mathes was walking home on West 22nd Street on August 8 around 12:30 a.m., when a car hit him from behind. The driver didn't stop.
"Whoever did this to my brother, this was one of the happiest times of his life," said Mathes' sister, Michell Mazyck.
Mathes worked at Mazyck's Folly Beach Hair Salon doing hair and nails.
"He wasn't an old man, but he was a young man who had just completed his license to become a barber and to build a clientele and it was just taken away from him in such a short period of time," Mazyck said.
Mazyck said after 10 days in the hospital, it appeared her brother was getting better.
"At one point, he mouthed I love you and tried to lift his arms up," Mazyck said. That was the most conscious he was in the 21 days he was in there."
She said that four operations were too much for Mathes to handle. He died the day after his 61st birthday.
"His body just couldn't take it anymore," Mazyck said.
Mazyck is now focusing her attention on finding out who hit Mathes and why that person didn't stop.
"Somebody knows somebody. Somebody knows something, yes," Mazyck said. "Whoever did this, I hope it preys on your conscience. Please come forward. I do pray that they do that."
