BEAUFORT, SC (WCSC) - The body of a missing swimmer was found early Monday morning about a tenth of a mile from where he was last seen.
Beaufort County Deputy Coroner David Ott said around 6 a.m. Monday, park rangers found the body of Joseph Scott, 31, of Allendale, which is south of Hunting Island Beach. He was found about a tenth of a mile from where he reportedly went underwater.
Authorities say Scott was swimming Saturday with a number of other people when high waves and an undertow pulled him under. No one saw him resurface. Coast Guard rescue crews from Savannah and Tybee Island searched the area by land and water. They suspended the search for Scott Sunday evening.
The coroner said Scott's death was ruled an accidental drowning and his body was sent to MUSC for an autopsy.
